The CPD Register’s Research Project is complete!

About the Research
This independent study examined the current landscape of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the UK. It explored how accreditation is perceived and valued by learners and training providers, and investigated the challenges presented by the rapid growth of CPD accreditation organisations and the need for greater consistency, transparency, and accountability within the sector.

Key Findings
Both training providers and learners view quality assurance, transparency, and recognition as essential for an effective CPD system. There is broad agreement that accreditation should be more standardised, rigorously monitored, and potentially linked to governmental frameworks.

For providers, accreditation signals quality and supports marketing, while learners see it as a marker of trust, achievement, and professional legitimacy.

However, challenges remain: inconsistent accreditation processes, limited awareness of criteria, and insufficient employer recognition undermine confidence and perceived value. To maximise the impact of CPD, accreditation needs stronger regulation, improved transparency, and closer collaboration among accreditation bodies, providers, learners, and employers.

Next Steps
This project forms a key component of an ongoing Doctorate in Professional Studies (DProf) in partnership with Middlesex University. The doctoral research will build upon these findings to develop long-term strategies for improving integrity, governance, and trust within the CPD industry.

The CPD Register will continue to use the insights gained to inform future initiatives aimed at enhancing industry standards and supporting training providers, employers, and learners alike.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to The CPD Research Project.
